  • Signature, Stamp. This volume is a rare French translation of the "Legend of the White Snake”, a cornerstone of Chinese oral and literary tradition. The physical copy held in the Seminary’s collection is of exceptional bibliographic value due to its scarcity; a handwritten note by the translator, Maurice Verdeille, reveals that this is one of only 30 limited-edition offprints. Further enhancing its scholarly value is a personal dedication from Verdeille to his friend Régis Gervain, dated November 1919 in Xiamen (Amoy). Historically, the book bears the official stamp of the "Congregação Mariana de Macau", documenting its provenance within the intellectual and clerical circles of the Macau Diocese. From a linguistic perspective, Verdeille employed a rigorous "word-for-word" translation method to preserve the "genius" and original syntax of the Chinese language. This approach provides modern researchers with a fascinating window into early 20th-century Sinology and the efforts of Western scholars to navigate the complexities of Eastern thought.
